Paul O’Grady’ marriage to husband ‘saved him’ says Christopher Biggins
Paul O’Grady died “unexpectedly but peacefully” aged 67 on Tuesday, with his death being announced by his husband Andre Portasio.
In a new interview, Paul’s close friend and fellow comedian Christopher Biggins, 74, opened up about their relationship as well as noticing a change in Paul after meeting Andre.
He told The Sun: “He married a gorgeous man and I think that is what saved him from descending into life as a rogue.
“He made a happy life in the Kent countryside with his animals.”
Paul had previously suffered a number of health issues including several heart attacks and a serious battle with Covid in recent years.

However, Christopher explained that Paul tried not to let this get in his way and instead acted “like a teenager as far as his health was concerned – he didn’t listen”.
Andre made the sad announcement on Tuesday with a short statement reading: “It is with great sadness that I inform you that Paul has passed away unexpectedly but peacefully yesterday evening.
“He will be greatly missed by his loved ones, friends, family, animals and all those who enjoyed his humour, wit and compassion.
“I know that he would want me to thank you for all the love you have shown him over the years.”
Paul and Andre began dating in 2006 before marrying in the summer of 2017.
Guests for their wedding included the likes of Ian McKellen, Michael Cashman and comedian Julian Clary.
A close friend told The Sun at the time of the wedding: “Paul is as happy as he’s ever been to be married to Andre.
“They kept the wedding to just their closest family and friends and had a big lunch afterwards to celebrate.”
Paul rarely spoke about his relationship, however, he did previously speak to the aforementioned publication about their sleeping arrangements.
He said: “I remember Joan Collins on my show saying the secret to a happy marriage was different bathrooms.
“She was right – and separate bedrooms also work a treat. I don’t like sharing a bed.
“What if I want to read? I also have to listen to the shipping forecast before I sleep.”
