The Willow Project Evie Allum Rosebery School

The Willow Project is a $8 Billion proposed gas drilling and oil project by ConcoPhillips a gas and oil company. Located in Alaska if approved it would be located inside the national petroleum reserve’s north slope.

Although the Willow Project has only just gained media attention, it is not new! The Project has been in the planning faze for years and was approved by Trump October last year. It was however reversed by a judge in Alaska as the environmental analysis was flawed. None the less this year on february 1st Bidens administration brought back the proposal but decided to scale it down.

But why is this so bad? Environmental groups have said “The project will serverly impact the planet”. And many have described it as a ‘carbon bomb’. As it will open up around 629 barrels of oil and produce 287 million metric tons of C02 over the next 3 decades. This would cause the earth irreversable damage. Eco systems gone. Global warming inevitable. Local animal’s extict.

Despite efforts; at signing petitions (over 1 million signatures were gained) and giving the situation media attention Biden has approved the Project. People accross the world have been devasted at this outcome Neve Maryan commenting “Even with all the signatures there was nothing we could do to stop it sadly.” This comes after Biden’s promise that he would end new oil and gas drilling on federal land. Meanwhile, the project has some support as it would open new job oppurtunites and help its local community. but the question is… Is it worth it just for the money?
