Smack the Pony could be making a return to our screens more than two decades after it first aired.

Fiona Allen, who was the main performer on the British sketch show along with Doon Mackichan and Sally Phillips, teased the comedy could be making a comeback.

The Channel 4 programme originally ran for three seasons from 1999 until 2003 and was revived once for a special Comic Relief sketch in 2017.

The trio were also keen to reboot Smack the Pony in 2021, but Sally, 52, told Metro.co.uk at the time TV commissioners had rejected their pitches.

But it seems they haven’t let the disappointment dampen their spirits, with Fiona spilling they were ‘filming’.

The 57-year-old told The Sun: ‘Wouldn’t it be great to see another one? We’re kind of filming, talking, that would be something fun.’

The comedy followed the three female comics as they dealt with a wide variety of topics, from irritating flatmates to workplace issues, and proved to be a popular hit with a regular audience of around 2.5million viewers.

Perhaps the most high-profile reboot in recent years has been Big Brother, due to air on ITV later this year.

Kevin Lygo, director of media and entertainment at ITV, has said that he’s aiming to recapture the essence of the show’s ‘golden period’.

The reality series first began in the UK in the year 2000, when 11 regular people entered the iconic house and were isolated from the public for nine weeks.

The show, originally hosted by Davina McCall, was broadcast on Channel 4 until 2010, when it switched over to Channel 5 until its last episode in 2018.

Metro.co.uk has contacted reps for Sally Phillips and Doon Mackichan for comment.
