Dead by Daylight Getting its Own Movie from Top Horror Producers Jason Blum and James Wan

Well, now here’s a twist – Dead by Daylight, the asymmetric multiplayer game that’s largely made its name by licensing classic horror movies, is going to be getting a horror movie on its own. According to a report from Variety, the DbD flick is shaping up to be a blockbuster horror event, as the biggest producers in the genre, Jason Blum and James Wan, will guide the project alongside Montreal-based franchise creators Behaviour Interactive.

Unsurprisingly, Behaviour Vice President Stephen Mulrooney is excited to be working with Blumhouse and James Wan’s production company Atomic Monster.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to work with Jason Blum and James Wan, two giants of the horror film industry, to further expand the ‘Dead by Daylight’ universe. At Behaviour, our motto is to create unique moments, together, forever. Atomic Monster and Blumhouse are the ideal partners to craft ‘Dead by Daylight’s’ killer entrance onto the big screen.”

No real word yet on what form the Dead by Daylight movie might take, as producers are still on the lookout for a writer and director at this point (assuming James Wan himself doesn’t take on the latter role). As mentioned, one of the big selling points of DdD is its crossover appeal, with the likes of Leatherface, Freddy, and Resident Evil characters rubbing blood-soaked shoulders. While the movie could conceivably be some sort of big crazy cinematic crossover, this quote from James Wan hints that the movie will focus on Dead by Daylight’s various original killers and characters…

“In ‘Dead by Daylight’ the Behaviour team has created a love letter to the world of horror, building an incredible environment teeming with atmosphere and terrifying villains — perfect for a scary cinematic adaptation. We’re big fans of the game at Atomic Monster, and are thrilled to be teaming up with Blumhouse to bring this frighteningly visceral world to the big screen.”

So, if the Dead by Daylight movie spawns its own popular cinematic franchise, will the Dead by Daylight game eventually license it? My head hurts.

The Dead by Daylight movie is currently without a release window. What are your thoughts on this? Is this movie something you’d be interested in seeing? Or is the whole concept kind of redundant since the best parts of DbD come from other horror movies and games?
