Denver East High student dies more than two weeks after being shot outside school
An East High School student who was shot while sitting in his car outside of the Denver school last month died on Wednesday, a family representative confirmed.
Luis Garcia, 16, was a junior at East and played on the varsity soccer team. He was shot Feb. 13 in his car near East 17th Avenue and City Park Esplanade.
Garcia’s family has described the teenager as “an extremely hard worker.” He had good grades and worked several jobs, according to his brother Santos Garcia.
“Luis always helps his family in every which way he can,” Santos Garcia told The Denver Post in an interview last month.
A GoFundMe fundraising campaign was created to help Garcia’s family with medical bills.
Following the shooting, officials with the Denver Police Department said it had two Denver Public Schools students in custody, but that they did not know the motive. The students, who were not named because they are juveniles, do not attend East.
A 17-year-old is being investigated for illegal possession of a handgun, and a 16-year-old is being investigated for auto theft and felony eluding. But neither were arrested on charges related specifically to the shooting, according to police.
