Scott Mills misses romantic weekend after getting locked in electric car
Radio DJ Scott Mills has had, in his own words, ‘quite the weekend’.
What was supposed to be a few nights away in Amsterdam turned into full on car-nage, when the 49-year-old got trapped in an electric vehicle with his fiancé Sam Vaughan on the way to the airport.
The Radio 2 presenter must’ve been kicking himself, as he recalled how he charged the main battery in preparation for the trip, but failed to do the same with the second one which died not far from the BBC’s Wogan House studios.
And so Scott and Sam were left waiting to be rescued, while watching the time tick on until their 8pm flight, which inevitably came and went.
Oopsies, indeed!
The presenter told the tale on Monday to a delighted audience, and concluded: ‘If you want to laugh, please go right ahead because everyone I’ve told the story so far has.’
‘I’ve had quite the weekend,’ the presenter began, but little did listeners know what was in store.
‘I said goodbye to you on Friday. Me and Sam agreed to head to the airport in my electric car at 4pm. Flight is at 8pm.’
He explained: ‘Get in the car. Car doesn’t start. In fact, nothing works. I go to get out of the car. I can’t get out. Sam tries his door. Nothing. Also cannot leave the car.’
What ensued was five hours of waiting, in which Scott recalled Sam had to ‘squeeze’ out a partially opened window to ‘find a loo’.
At least one thing went right, as Scott finished his story with the answer to the question on everyone’s lips: ‘Missed my flight, didn’t go’.
Now that’s a story that will be told for years to come – congratulations, Scott.
Scott’s campfire tale comes after Radio 2 announced Ken Bruce’s replacement will be Vernon Kay last week.
Chatting about his new radio opportunity, the television presenter said: ‘I’m absolutely over the moon to be handed the microphone to present the mid-morning show on Radio 2, and what an honour to follow in the footsteps of the mighty Ken Bruce.’
Last month it was announced the Scottish broadcasting veteran would be stepping down from presenting his mid-morning show after 31 years.
In a big radio shake up for the BBC, Scott also took over Steve Wright’s early afternoon slot last year.
As for the electric car-gate, it is not clear whether Scott postponed his trip, or if he is indeed considering switching to a hybrid vehicle.
