Urgent warning to drivers as your address could cost you £1k fine

DRIVERS have been warned that failing to update the address their your licence could land them with a hefty fine.

The DVLA must be notified of a change of permanent address – even a temporary move – as up-to-date residential information is needed in case a driver is involved in an accident.

And this applies to both full and provisional licences.

The DVLA tweeted: “Moved home? You must update your driving licence, Vehicle log book, Direct Debit for vehicle tax and Private number plate documents.”

It costs nothing to change the address and you can still drive while waiting for an updated licence.

According to GOV.UK, drivers can be hit with fines of up to £1,000 if they don’t notify the DVLA of a new address.

Drivers can apply to change their licence address through online and paper applications.

If you also want to apply to change your name – for example, if you’ve got married – you can only do this by post using a form which you can pick up from your local Post Office.

And drivers over 70 must renew their driving licence every three years or face a fine.

If they don’t do so, they will no longer be legally allowed to drive beyond their 70th birthday.

Plus, those who don’t renew their document will be committing a serious offence.

Their licence and insurance will not be valid, and they face a fine of up to £1,000 and even having their vehicle taken away.

The DVLA said on Twitter: “After you turn 70, you need to renew your licence every three years. It’s easy, quick and secure to do it online.”
