Chief adviser to CMO among 5 get honorary degree in FM University convocation – Times of India
BHUBANESWAR: R Balakrishnan, chief adviser to chief minister Naveen Patnaik’s office, among five noted personalities were awarded with honorary doctorate degrees at the 11th annual convocation of the Fakir Mohan University Balasore on Saturday.
Balakrishnan, a retired IAS officer and former development commissioner of Odisha government, was not present at the convocation to receive the honorary doctorate degree.
Ajit Kumar Mohanty, a native of Odisha and director of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), is known for his work in several areas of nuclear physics. He was director of the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics. He gave a convocation address after receiving the honorary DSc degree.
Adwaita Gadanayak, director general of National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), is known for his famous sculptures including the black marble replica of Gandhi leading the Salt March installed in the capital.
Sujata Mohapatra, a noted Odissi dancer and disciple of Padma Vibhushan Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, is a Kendra Sangeet Natak Akademi award winner. Sudhakar Panda, a distinguished professor of applied and analytical economics and former chairman of State Finance Commission, Odisha, received the honorary DLitt degree with other three dignitaries.
On the occasion, Fakir Mohan University vice-chancellor Santosh Kumar Tripathy said the university will adopt a nearby village Baulagadia and help the sculptors of the village to get skill development training in their sector. “We are planning to discuss with noted sculptors to help us in this endeavour,” he added.
He said the university has taken several steps including ‘each one teache one’ and an adult education programme in its periphery. The institution has tried to convince the parents of 18 dropout children to return to school. “We have collaborated with different national and international institutions and agencies for research works,” he added.
Mohanty said, “Blending the modern with the traditional is full of possibilities and pathways towards greatness, which need to be rediscovered from our rich cultural and scientific legacies.”
The university awarded 81 gold medals to meritorious students. As many as 98 scholars received PhD degrees at the convocation. Dignitaries released ‘Punascha Bodhadayini’ magazine.
