Sunrise reporter Mylee Hogan in hot water for joking Glenn McGrath had died
It might be a trend doing the rounds on TikTok, but an Australian TV reporter jumping on the bandwagon to joke that retired cricketer Glenn McGrath had died has been met with a strong reaction from her co-hosts and the public.
During a segment on breakfast program Sunrise, in which the hosts were discussing a viral trend where people prank others by telling them a celebrity has died, reporter Mylee Hogan, 31, jumped in to say that ‘Glenn McGrath died’.
Her comments came after co-host Mark Beretta, 56, announced that the cricketing legend was about to join them in the studio for an interview about the Boxing Day test match.
However her joke didn’t land well.
‘Don’t even, it’s not funny,’ co-host Edwina Bartholomew, 39, said. ‘It really isn’t funny.’
Hogan, the granddaughter of Crocodile Dundee actor Paul Hogan, laughed off the exchange before Bartholomew said ‘sorry’ while looking down the camera to audiences watching along at home.
However, some viewers were not impressed by the joke, posting on social media it was ‘immature behaviour’.
But others defended her and said to ‘give her a break’.
Her comments came after the trio discussed the trend, something Beretta made clear he wasn’t a fan of, while Hogan said she found them hilarious.
‘People think the over the top reactions are funny and others think it’s a cruel joke,’ Hogan said about how people are responding online to the videos.
‘I personally think this is really funny guys,’ she added.
Bartholomew jumped in and said their differing opinions might be down to their age difference.
‘I think it shows the generation divide because Beretts doesn’t think it’s funny at all. It’s pretty mean,’ she said.
But Beretta added that he thought the trend ‘could be the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen’.
‘I don’t like it at all. We shouldn’t be running that. Get it off. Get it off now,’ he said.
While Beretta wasn’t too keen on embracing this joke, he’s had plenty of fun on air in the past, just last month donning a sumo suit to mark the Sumo Suit championships happening in Sydney.
However, despite his best efforts, he was quickly defeated by one of the contestants in the competition.
Sunrise airs on Channel Seven in Australia.
