If you love nothing better than stocking up on mini toiletries when visiting a new hotel (à la Ross from Friends), new rules may soon put a stop to your holiday habits.
In a bid to reduce waste packaging, the European Commission plans to ban tiny bottles of shampoo and shower gel in hotels throughout the EU.
This means the complimentary miniature bottles that often greet us in hotel bathrooms will soon be a thing of the past.
While we’ll be sad to wave goodbye to these adorable toiletries, we fully understand the reason behind the move – as the minis use lots of plastic and paper.
The idea has come about as the European Commission plans to reduce the carbon footprint of the EU within the next decade – making the packaging industry carbon neutral by 2050.
‘Without action, the EU would see a further 19% increase in packaging waste by 2030, and for plastic packaging waste even a 46% increase,’ it said in a statement.
This is not limited to toiletries either, as single-use fruit and vegetable packaging will also be getting the chop – in favour of recyclable and reusable containers.
However, a start date hasn’t been revealed yet – as talks are still being carried out.
And it’s worth pointing out that mini toiletries will still be available duty-free and in shops, it’s just the free ones that are set to be axed.
