Here’s how Jio wants to take on Facebook’s, Instagram’s ‘most loved’ feature – Times of India
Mark Zuckerberg-led Meta has been focussing on Reels – a feature on both Instagram and Facebook that allows users to create short videos for their audience. The company has, in the past, highlighted the feature’s significance as it competes with TikTok and various other platforms in this space. The company is now getting another competitor from India. Called Platform, the new app is aimed at entertainers and does exactly what Reels do.
The Indian edition of the music and pop culture magazine, Rolling Stones India, Creativeland Asia and Jio Platforms Limited have jointly launched Platform – a short-video app for entertainers. As per a press release, the app is aimed at “star entertainers, with an ecosystem built for organic growth and steady monetisation.”
It will have a niche audience as well as creators including singers, musicians, actors, comedians, dancers, fashion designers, and all those who influence the culture.
“Platform is powered by the tech infrastructure of Jio Platforms Limited, the force behind the meteoric rise of India’s leading telecom operator ‘Jio’ and the force behind platforms across Jio Media, Entertainment and Digital Apps,” communication from the trio of the company said.
Who can join Platform?
The first 100 founding members of the app will be able to join the platform invite-only. They will be given a distinguished golden tick verification on their profiles. These OG members will be able to invite new artist members to sign up through referral programmes.
The new members will also be the first to preview new features added to the ecosystem. The companies plan to open the app to creators from various verticals. The app has started its beta testing and will go live in January 2023.
How Platform will work?
As per the information available, Platform will not prioritise paid algorithms but instead allows creators to rise through the ranks and reputation “organically, resulting in the monetisation of their talent and a continued stream of revenue for the creators.”
The rise through the ranks will be denoted by silver, blue and red tick verifications. The vectors affecting these coloured verifications are fanbase growth and content engagement – not paid promotions.
There will be a ‘Book Now’ button on all creator profiles that will allow people and/or event organisers to interact as well as book them for partnerships, production, and more. When it comes to creators, they will be “featured in the Rolling Stone India digital editorials and monetise their skills through in-app bookings.”
