Mystery as MORE cars dumped in canals after £64k Land Rover found in water
MORE questions have arisen after a third car was found dumped in Black Country canals – days after a luxury Land Rover was fished out by crane.
Locals spotted the roof of a submerged blue Volkswagen Golf bobbing in the low waters of the Dudley Canal on Thursday.
On Wednesday, a white larger car had to be hauled out of the Grand Union canal and three days earlier, a luxury car was also discovered in a Tipton canal.
Kevin Davenport, 60, a resident from nearby was taking a walk alongside the canal when he spotted the out-of-place vehicle.
He told local paper Express and Star: “I often take a walk by the canal and when I spotted it, all I thought was that is disgusting.
“It really is disgusting, because you think of all the fluids such as oils, brake fluid, it will cause damage to the canal.
“I saw the photos of the car in a canal in Tipton on Monday, and now this, it makes you think are they connected in some way.”
It’s believed the Discovery 4 Land Rover, worth around £64,000, was stolen from Staffordshire and then rolled into the New Main Line waterway in Tipton on Sunday.
The Canal & River Trust were forced to use a crane to lift the floating car out.
In another bizarre incident, a white lager car also needed to be retrieved from the Grand Union canal on Wednesday.
The charity revealed that each rescue operation costs them about £10,000 – which is money they “can’t afford”.
It’s not clear whether the car-canal dumps are linked but West Midlands Police is investigating at least one of the incidents.
The spate of car dumping’s has sparked anger amongst community members on local Facebook groups with one commenting: “What an idiotic thing to do.
“Not only the cost of the Land Rover but all the cost of crane hire and the disruption at the lock, if these people were ever caught and found guilty instead of fining then 50p per week for 6 months, they should send them the full bill for everything.”
While another added: “Oh yes very funny. But what about the pollution caused by the fuels etc. Did the wildlife deserve that?”
