Batman star Kevin Conroy dies aged 66 as co-stars pay tribute

Kevin Conroy has sadly died at the age of 66. The news of his death was confirmed on Thursday by actress Diane Pershing – who voiced DC villain Poison Ivy in the animated series – as she announced it on Facebook today.

Taking to the social media site, the actress revealed Kevin had been ill for some time and added he will be “sorely missed”.

“Very sad news: our beloved voice of Batman, Kevin Conroy, died yesterday,” she wrote, sharing several photos of Conroy and several other DC voice actors.

“He’s been ill for a while but he really put in a lot of time at the cons, to the joy of all of his fans. He will be sorely missed not just by the cast of the series but by his legion of fans all over the world.

“Below are pictures of Kevin with Loren Lester who plays Robin another with me and Tara Strong who is in the later episodes of Batman cartoons.

“And then finally, one of Kevin and me in front of the huge audiences we used to get when we did our panels. RIP, friend.”

Tributes have since poured in for the beloved actor as fans took to the micro-blogging site.

Eric penned: “Kevin Conroy passing away is devastating. His iteration of Batman is the first character I ever loved and set me on the life path I’m currently on. When discussing the all time pantheon Batman actors, his name will forever deserve to be mentioned near the top. Rest In Peace.”

Tad wrote: “Thank you for everything, Kevin Conroy.”

Home of DCU remarked: “Rest in peace Kevin Conroy. Thank you for all the childhood memories.”

Conroy’s Batman credits included Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Batman Beyond, Static Shock, Justice League. Justice League Unlimited, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Batman and Harley Quinn, and Justice League vs. the Fatal Five, among others.

Born in 1955, Kevin earned a full scholarship to attend Juilliard’s drama division in 1973.

He moved to New York City in 1973 when he earned a full scholarship to attend Juilliard’s drama division.

While there he studied under John Houseman and roomed with Robin Williams.

He graduated in 1978 and then began touring with Houseman’s acting group, The Acting Company.

following that time he moved into theatre and television acting, and eventually landed in voice acting with the launch of Batman: The Animated Series in 1992.

He finally had a chance to play Bruce Wayne in live-action in The CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover.

Kevin is survived by his husband, Vaughn C. Williams, sister Trisha Conroy, and brother Tom Conroy.
