Have accepted Congress’ decision to snap ties with AIUDF: Badruddin Ajmal
Ajmal, who is also a Lok Sabha MP, said that severing ties will benefit both the parties.
The core committee of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has recently resolved to sever ties with AIUDF and move out AIUDF from the Mahajot (Grand alliance). Ten parties’ alliance was cobbled up ahead of assembly polls in March-April this year.
Ajmal told media persons on Monday, “Congress is the Big brother and it has decided to leave us without even asking us, we accept the same.”
He added, “It is a political alliance and we are okay if both parties are not aligned. Remaining alone both parties will gain and there will no damage to any party.”
Another party Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) has announced that it will contest the by polls on its own.
APCC president Bhupen Borah recently said that AIUDF has worked against the core principle of alliance. “We have allied to fight against the divisive policies of BJP. AIUDF leaders praised the BJP led government, even one of the leaders supported Taliban. This is not acceptable to us.”
Congress leaders said that AIUDF leaders for individual gains are praising the BJP led government.
A section of Congress leaders has been maintaining that alliance with AIUDF has assisted the AIUDF and Congress suffered reverses in Upper Assam due to alliance.
BJP in the run up to assembly polls has run a campaign branding AIUDF as a communal party.
Congress made repeated overtures to bring regional political party Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and Peasant leader, Akhil Gogoi led Raijor Dal to the grand alliance however these parties refused to join the front citing presence of AIUDF.
Ajmal said, “Akhil Gogoi whose party has one MLA is frustrated and is meeting Rahul Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee to hog media limelight.”
Congress in this year’s assembly polls won 29 seats while its ally All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) won 14 seats. Two sitting Congress MLAs have resigned from the assembly. While BPF won four seats and CPI(M) wrested one.
