Dragons make history in thrilling NRLW finish

A sweetly-struck Rachel Pearson field goal has seen the Dragons clinch the first ever NRLW golden point finish against the Broncos.

The Dragons led for a majority of the match, but the Broncos dominated possession for much of the second half.

They drew level in the final minute when Ali Brigginshaw crossed under the sticks before Tarryn Aiken’s conversion tied it up at 18-all.

Off the kick off, the Broncos marched up the field before Brigginshaw’s final-play field goal attempt from 35m out fell agonisingly short.

It was with their first use of the ball in golden point that the Dragons got it done with a field goal as well-struck as any drop kick could ever be.

“Good delivery there from dummy half, and Pearson nails the assignment,” Nine commentator Chris Warren said.

Ruan Sims said the win was set up three tackles earlier.

“What a wonderful finish, what a wonderful opportunity for these women to showcase the first ever golden point game in NRLW history, and the first time the Dragons have kicked and won by a field goal in NRLW history,” she said.

“Rachael Pearson she’s the one I earmarked they will be going to first. Kezie Apps set it up with a brilliant run down that right edge, followed it up with a nice little set up and a good settler by Keeley Davis.

“The delivery out the back by Quincy Dodd was on-song, and while the Broncos had the run of that second half, it was the Dragons who really came away with such a good win in a nail-biting finish.”

The Broncos’ goal kicking was the difference in the four-tries-to-three loss.

NRLW Highlights: Broncos v Dragons – Round 4

The Broncos scored first in just the sixth minute, before the Dragos scored twice in three minutes to hit the sheds 12-4 up.

They scored their third in the 55th minute, before the Broncs scored two late tries to draw level.

Unfortunately for the Broncos, Brianna Clark missed each of the first three conversions, before Tarryn Aiken kicked the crucial goal to tie it up from right in front.

Meanwhile, Rachel Peason’s boot was dialled in, kicking three from three plus the final field goal.

The win was the Dragon’s third of the year. They’ll take on the undefeated Knights in the third game of next weekend’s triple-header at Central Coast Stadium.
