Four things we learned from Meghan Markle’s third Spotify podcast

This week Meghan Markle was joined by TV star and writer Mindy Kaling for a podcast episode called ‘The Stigma of the Singleton’. And during her exploration of the topic, Meghan spoke about her experience of getting engaged to Prince Harry and her love of a famous comic book series. Here are four things we learned from episode three of Archetypes.

Meghan planned her wedding way before she married Prince Harry

Meghan opened her podcast episode this week by stating: “When I was 14, I planned my wedding.”

Meghan said the wedding was an assignment for her class at school, and she imagined a swan lake, a ceremony at the Bel Air Hotel and a strapless wedding dress.

This week’s episode covers being single and the societal expectation for women to get married, and Meghan later noted that this assignment no longer runs at her former school.

Archie was not named after Archie comics

While discussing their favourite books growing up, Meghan spoke of her love of the Archie comics franchise.

But despite the similarities with the name of her son Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, Meghan denied the comics inspired the choice.

Meghan said: “My son is not named after the Archie comic books, but I loved them.”

Meghan speaks about her childhood

Touching on her love of the comic book series, Meghan said: “My parents split up when I was around two/three years old.

“And I always wanted this sort of cookie cutter, looking, perfect, life, and you looked at that and there’s like a boy in a letterman jacket and it just was so… I romanticise that.

“It’s all part of the things that make you have this idea of what you want your life to be like when I grow up.”

She added: “At a certain point after hearing it a million times over you’re like, ‘I chose him too’?

“But thankfully I have a partner who was countering that narrative for me and going ‘they’ve got it all wrong. I’m the lucky one because you chose me,’ but it is gendered.

“And it’s archetyped and it’s stereotyped that you’re so lucky.”
