Masters of the Universe Updates a He-Man Legend for the Netflix Series’ World
The Masters of the Universe: Revelation prequel revamps a classic He-Man legend in Eternia’s war-torn past before the upcoming Netflix series.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Masters of the Universe: Revelation #1 by Kevin Smith, Rob David, Tim Sheridan, Mindy Lee, Rico Renzi, Kathleen Barnett, and Deron Bennett, on sale now.
In He-Man lore, Prince Adam and He-Man himself have usually looked to Sorceress and the warriors of Eternia, led by Man-at-Arms, for inspiration. Castle Grayskull is a myth come to life that both heroes are still learning more about in their shared journey to protect the planet from the evil forces of Skeletor. However, there’s been one legend that has loomed over the franchise for decades, He-Ro. The warrior was meant to be a key player in their history, but the toyline featuring him went floundered before it got off the ground.
But in Masters of the Universe: Revelation #1, the prequel to the upcoming Netflix series, this classic figure gets a major revamp and a firm place in the new show’s continuity.
Originally, He-Ro was shaped to be a champion like He-Man in Preternia, with Mattel in 1987 aiming to capitalize on the toy craze via this extension of the franchise. That toyline, bar a few prototypes, didn’t get released, and He-Ro was only officially released in the late 2000s.
However, the He-Rp legend had a small presence in DC’s Masters of the Multiverse story as well as the Masters of the Universe and Injustice crossover, where He-Ro was a mythological figure Adam and He-Man revered. He was basically the He-Man before Adam took over, and in the lore, fought the Horde and Snake Men, battling alongside King Grayskull. In time, he’d be revealed as He-Man and She-Ra’s ancestor.
This reboot takes a different, yet tragic path, as the interdimensional being Orlax of Primeria poisons King Randor. He-Man goes through the Cosmic Corridor to track it. But as he slips back in time, he discovers King Grayskull centuries before is in the same precarious position. His son, D’Are was poisoned too, and it culminates in He-Man chopping off a piece of its tentacle to take home for Sorceress to study.
Sadly, D’Are dies, but D’Vann has another heir in the shape of Ro. Inspired by He-Man’s heroics, he takes up his father’s Sword of Power, which inevitably will be the one Adam wields in the future and vows to be a champion in a closed time loop. It’s made even more endearing as He-Man bids them goodbye, going back through time and seeing He-Ro in armor, representing the He-Man of his era.
There’s another intricate caveat to the story as well, as Ro’s mother, Veena, is the mortal form of the Sorceress before she transcended to protect the Castle and the mystical power of Eternia. With the tentacle regenerating into another Orlax, it remains to be seen if she’ll unlock the secrets of the beast, reconcile the past life she lived as Veena, and possibly find a way to bring He-Ro back for one last battle.
