James Gunn And Suda51 Not Involved With Lollipop Chainsaw Remake
Two high-profile names who worked on the original release of Lollipop Chainsaw have stated they aren’t involved with the game’s recently announced remake.
Lollipop Chainsaw’s executive producer Yoshimi Yasuda announced his company Dragimi Games would be working on a remake of the 2012 hack-and-slash cult classic.
James Gunn, who would later direct the Guardians of the Galaxy movie series, was one of the original co-writers of Lollipop Chainsaw.
Goichi “Suda51” Suda is a video game designer and CEO of Grasshopper Manufacture, he acted as the creative director for the original release of Lollipop Chainsaw.
Gunn recently made a Tweet stating that he wasn’t involved in the remake project: “To answer the question in the article, neither I nor [Suda51] are currently involved in this. I heard about it for the first time from Suda a couple weeks ago.”
Gunn further added in a reply tweet: “I neither endorse nor condemn it! I simply don’t know anything about it. But as articles are starting to slap our names on there, I think it’s important to make clear no one ever approached us about it.”
Suda followed up on Gunn’s statement with one of his own: “To add my two cents, like [Gunn] says, neither nor I am involved in this project at all, and Grasshopper Manufacture has nothing to do with development or anything.”
In Yasuda’s statement announcing the remake, he seemed to imply that Suda wasn’t very directly involved with the project. “As Suda-san was very busy handling development on other projects at the time, I served as director and producer, creating a joint development team consisting of staff from Grasshopper Manufacture and Kadokawa Games, overseeing development directly. Suda-san looked over the game design and supervised the project as an executive producer.”
Despite Yasuda’s statement, the credits for the original Lollipop Chainsaw list Yasuda as an executive producer and Suda as the creative director (via VGC).
Yasuda stated there would be differences between the original and the remake, including a new soundtrack with few of the original songs included due to licensing issues and also “a more realistic approach to the graphics…”
The Lollipop Chainsaw remake is aiming for a 2023 release.
