Michael Owen might have fled the UK to avoid seeing his daughter Gemma on Love Island, but the news is following him wherever he goes.

The former footballer, 42, flew to Germany as his daughter Gemma Owen, 19, joined the raunchy reality TV dating show.

However, being in a different country did not stop the topic from being brought up as he appeared on Channel 4 for the Live UEFA Nations League.

Moments after the broadcast started, Michael was asked how he felt about Gemma’s Love Island debut.

He joked: ‘I came all the way to Germany to try and avoid all that back at home and you brought it up straight away!

‘I’m feeling alright, thank you. This is taking my mind off it so don’t bring it back up.’

Michael might want to keep his notifications off after Tuesday’s show as his daughter was chosen by the Italian stallion bombshell Davide Sanclimenti to couple up with.

Davide had joined the show after the initial cohort of contestants, allowing him to have his pick of the ladies.

Announcing his choice, he told the Islanders: ‘Naturally it’s not been easy to choose because in only 24 hours it’s difficult to try to know everyone and try to make the right decision.

‘So I decided to couple up with this girl because there is not just attraction, I mean yes, she’s a stunning girl. I felt that we really had a good time and I would like to know her more.

‘So the girl I would like to couple up with is Gemma.’

Gemma going on the show was Michael’s ‘worst nightmare’ (Picture: Michael Owen Instagram)

Michael had previously called Gemma going into the villa his ‘worst nightmare’ given the raunchy antics the Islanders get up to both in the tasks and in their downtime.

He told ITV News: ‘I have no doubts that she will make us all proud. It’s probably a father’s worst nightmare, but whatever she wants to do you’ve got to be supportive.

‘It’s been different without her in the house. I’ve got other kids and my wife and it’s been quite tough because she’s had to switch her phone off and we’ve had no contact for a couple of weeks so that’s been the hard bit.

‘I’ve heard a lot about it. I think old, grumpy men like me will always have an opinion on it because I don’t watch it and you just hear the snippets, but she assures me that it’s not as bad as I think. So, we’ll give it a watch and I hope she enjoys herself.’

Love Island airs weeknights at 9pm on ITV2.
