Call of Duty: Vanguard Teases Kick Off With a Sniper Shot And An ‘Atta Girl’

Activision Blizzard is currently facing serious ongoing allegations of harassment and mistreatment of marginalized workers. To learn more, please visit our timeline as well as our in-depth report on the subject.

It seems a new teaser for Call of Duty: Vanguard has snuck its way into Warzone. As spotted by GameSpot, a new cutscene has been added to the end of Warzone matches that shows off a new character that may hint at Vanguard’s story.

Normally, Warzone matches end with a team evacuating from the encroaching gas onto a helicopter and flying away. YouTube user OHB The Don posted a video showing the usual evacuation, but now the final player zipping up the rope is shot in the head and falls back to the ground. The scene cuts to woman wearing a 1940’s Russian military uniform, a side cap, and a smoking sniper rifle.

That’d be one thing, but the teaser has also been shared by Call of Duty: Vanguard Sam Maggs, who replied “atta girl,” lending legitimacy to the video.

Previous Call of Duty: Vanguard leaks point towards a new World War II setting, at least partially on the western front, and possibly in an alternate universe where the war didn’t end in 1945.

Some fans are theorizing the woman seen in the teaser could be inspired by Lyudmila Pavlichenko, a famous Russian sniper who was credited with 309 confirmed kills.

Activision has not commented on the teaser yet, but a formal announcement about the next Call of Duty is expected in the near future given each game historically releases during the holiday season. In the meantime, Activision is embroiled in a lawsuit alleging multiple acts of sexual misconduct, harassment, and misogyny. Three senior developers at Blizzard were fired earlier this week, including Diablo 4 director Luis Barriga, lead level designer Jesse McCree, and World of Warcraft designer Jonathan LeCraft.
