Illusion makes gaping HOLE appear in the middle of road – so what’s going on?
AN OPTICAL illusion spooked drivers into thinking a gaping hole had appeared in the middle of a busy road.
Video of the potential hazard shows motorists nervously trying to dodge the mirage by pumping the brakes and driving around it.
But it turns out the hole was nothing more than a puddle of glistening water which had gathered against the side of the wall on a Milwaukee road.
The clip has already racked up more than 9.3 million views across Twitter and another 2.2 million on the Instagram account where it was originally posted.
The man behind the camera is heard giving an animated commentary as he watches others also be tricked into thinking the road had caved away.
As he approached the puddle, he says: “That’s just a pit. On the on-ramp. They don’t have this sh*t blocked off or nothing.
“Watch this guy’s coming. He’s coming behind me.”
He narrates while watching the motorist – who presumably also thinks they are in danger – slow and go around the puddle.
Another motorist then speeds toward the pretend crater, only to sense the same uneasiness and applies the brakes with a heavy foot.
The man filming says: “Holy sh*t. Oh, it’s water… It looks like a pit doesn’t it?
“I thought they just carved out a hole. I’m tripping.”
A number of people revealed on Twitter they felt a rollercoaster of emotions while watching the clip.
One person admitted: “You had me.”
Another wrote: “That second car had me holding my heart in my throat man. Damn.”
Someone else said: “I was very scared when the second car sped up behind the first.
“If I ever see something like this, I’m definitely reversing my car without blinking twice, can’t be putting my precious life on the line.”
But some weren’t fooled so easily, instantly being able to recognise the pool of water instead of a hole.
One person wrote: “That’s not a mirage, its water”.
Another said: “I caught on it was water in 4 seconds!”
It comes as another optical illusion is touted to reveal your personality traits at a glance, but be warned – only a tiny segment of the population will notice one of the two images first.
The illusion appeared on BrightSide, a YouTube channel that shares mind-boggling optical illusions and decodes their meanings.
