Gerd Muller dead: Germany and Bayern Munich legend dies aged 75

Bayern Munich have confirmed that Gerd Muller has died at the age of 75. The club legend, who scored 654 career goals, had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease since 2015.

Muller was Bundesliga’s top scorer on seven different occasions, on top of notching an unprecedented 365 league goals in German football.

His accolades were not just individual, with a World Cup triumph, a European Cup victory and four Bundesliga titles also on his CV.

On an emotional day for Bayern and their fans, the club released the following statement: “The FC Bayern world is standing still today.

“The club and all its fans are mourning the death of Gerd Müller, who passed away on Sunday morning at the age of 75. Müller made history with Bayern and the Germany national team.

Der Bomber originally joined Bayern in summer 1964 and won the Intercontinental Cup, three European Cups and a European Cup Winners’ Cup.

“He was a Bundesliga champion and DFB Cup winner four times each.

“With the national team he won the 1972 European Championship and the 1974 World Cup, scoring the winning goal in the final in Munich against the Netherlands.

“After retiring, he remained with the club for a long time as a youth coach. He’s survived by his wife Uschi and a daughter.”

Bayern CEO, Herbert Hainer, added: “Today is a sad, dark day for FC Bayern and all its fans.

“Gerd Müller was the greatest striker there’s ever been, and a fine person and character of world football.

“We’re all united in deep mourning with his wife Uschi as well as his family.

“FC Bayern wouldn’t be the club we all love today without Gerd Müller. His name and memory will live on forever.”

Muller will leave behind quite the legacy, having led the all-time World Cup scoring charts with 14 for decades before being overtaken by both Miroslav Klose and Ronaldo.

Even more impressive is that the German managed his goals total across the span of just two tournaments, whereas the aforementioned duo both played in four.

Reliving his tremendous career highlights the fact that today is a sad day for all football fans, not just those of Bayern and the German national team.
