It was mere months ago that I used this column to tout my favorite vape pen. I went so far as to tell you, dear readers, that my preferred way to consume cannabis was by vaporizing it.
Since then, however, I’ve had numerous reasons to take a break from smoking weed, including a mild case of COVID-19 last September and another close call when my husband contracted the virus in December. While I still love my Seed & Smith vape pen – it’s seriously the only one I use – these breaks have inspired me to embrace another form of cannabis: edibles.

Everyone, including comedian Chelsea Handler, has a story about eating too much THC and feeling uncomfortably or uncontrollably high. For the most, this was my experience with edibles, be it gummies, chocolate, taffy, what have you. Simply put, 10 milligrams was too much for me to ingest at once.
Then I tried Coda Signature’s line of Fruit Notes, which comes in the traditional, 10-milligram serving size and also a lower dose of 5 milligrams of THC. The latter is what changed my perspective and transformed me into an edibles evangelist.
When Fruit Notes debuted in 2019, Coda Signature touted them as vegan, gluten-free, made with real fruit and “lightly dusted with an infused sugar that is blended with whole spices and aromatics,” according to the announcement. They are currently available in six flavors, including cucumber-lychee, mango-chili-lime and cherry-sarsaparilla. Don’t get me wrong: They are delicious. But the reason I love them is because these gummies offer just the right amount of high.
While everyone is different, Coda’s gummies tend to elevate my spirits without adding a mental fog. It’s more giggles than lethargy, more of a subtle boost than a slap-you-across-the-face stoned. And because they’re low-dose, I can eat another one a few hours later without worrying about a next-day weed hangover. (Trust me, it’s happened.)
So if you’re still on the fence about edibles, give Coda a try. In April, the Denver-based company released new, fast-acting or rapid onset gummies, so you feel the effects within 15 to 20 minutes. Just remember, start slow and work your way up. It’s even easier when taking 5 milligrams at a time.
