Cillian Murphy has revealed the main reason he moved home to Ireland after sending over a decade in London.

The acclaimed actor has carved out a stellar career in Ireland, the UK and Hollywood, having starred in the likes of Red Eye, The Wind That Shakes The Barley and, of course, Peaky Blinders.

Cillian and his wife, Yvonne McGuinness, are both from Ireland: Cillian from Cork and Yvonne from Kilkenny, and the pair settled in London in 2001.

Both of their children, Malachy, 16, and 14-year-old Aran, were born in England, but the couple made the decision to move back to Ireland in 2015.

The reason for this, Cillian revealed in a new interview, was because of Aran and Malachy’s accents.

‘We wanted the kids to be Irish,’ Cillian told Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast.

‘They were sort of at that age where they were pre-teens and [had] very posh English accents and I wasn’t appreciating that too much! So we decided to come back.’

The Tommy Shelby actor added: ‘And you know, our parents are at a certain age. It was just a nice time to come home.’

He explained that it is a common ‘Irish story to move away, do your thing and then come home.’

The family are intensely private, with Cillian preferring to keep his work life and celebrity status separate from his life with his wife and children.

Partly because of this, Cillian admitted that he had never felt the desire to move to Hollywood, though he had lived in several US cities throughout his career for work purposes.

Proving he doesn’t need TinselTown, Cillian ended up becoming more of a household name than ever in recent years as he led the ensemble in acclaimed BBC period gangster drama Peaky Blinders.

The final episode of the six-series BBC period gangster drama, set in Birmingham, came to a close in April, in an ending that many fans have called ‘perfect’.

An initially-planned season seven of the much-loved show has been swapped for an epic movie conclusion, however it’s so far unclear as to who will feature in the movie.

There is no exact release date for the eagerly-anticipated film as of yet, but it is rumoured to not begin production until late 2022 or even early 2023, meaning fans will have a while to wait.
