Behind the magic: A look at the costumes for ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’
Wizarding fans, mark your calendars. Broadway play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” is coming to Toronto in May.
The play debuted in London in 2016 and was to open with an all-Canadian cast in October 2020, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The play starts 19 years after J.K. Rowling’s books end and features adult Harry, Hermione and Ron Weasley and their children. The show runs as a single 3.5-hour performance.
The Star’s Richard Lautens got a chance to see how performers would look in their respective roles.
The costume design is but one way the production has invested in effects. Ahead of the production, the Mirvish theatre has spent $5 million in renovations such as introducing a darker colour palette, installing a catwalk system above the ceiling and reducing the seating capacity from 2,300 to 1,600.
The Mirvish website warns audiences the show will use theatrical haze and fog.
“Cursed Child” is by Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, and was written by Thorne and directed by Tiffany. Rowling remains surrounded by controversy as fans and the cast of the Harry Potter films have criticized her social media presence.
“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” will show in Toronto on May 31 at the CAA Ed Mirvish Theatre.
