Behind the magic: A look at the costumes for ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’

Wizarding fans, mark your calendars. Broadway play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” is coming to Toronto in May.

The play debuted in London in 2016 and was to open with an all-Canadian cast in October 2020, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The play starts 19 years after J.K. Rowling’s books end and features adult Harry, Hermione and Ron Weasley and their children. The show runs as a single 3.5-hour performance.

The Star’s Richard Lautens got a chance to see how performers would look in their respective roles.

Trevor White plays a now middle-aged Harry Potter. He is seen in the mirror trying on the glasses with the scar and suit for the first time with costume designer Katrina Lindsay.
Thomas Barnet plays Scorpius and is seen in his Slytherin Hogwarts School look in the wardrobe room. The production has over 500 costumes, dozens of hand made hats, wigs and accessories of all sorts that need to be custom-fitted to the actors and understudies.
Sarah Afful plays Hermione and tries on one of her outfits.

The costume design is but one way the production has invested in effects. Ahead of the production, the Mirvish theatre has spent $5 million in renovations such as introducing a darker colour palette, installing a catwalk system above the ceiling and reducing the seating capacity from 2,300 to 1,600.

The Mirvish website warns audiences the show will use theatrical haze and fog.

Gregory Prest who plays Ron tries on his signature orange sweater for the first time.
Milliner (hat-maker) Liz Crossman fits actor Raquel Duffy. The hat is handmade with silk taffeta imported from Scotland.
Craig Kilander is the local hair and wig supervisor and works on one of Hermione's wigs here.

“Cursed Child” is by Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, and was written by Thorne and directed by Tiffany. Rowling remains surrounded by controversy as fans and the cast of the Harry Potter films have criticized her social media presence.

“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” will show in Toronto on May 31 at the CAA Ed Mirvish Theatre.

Sarah Afful plays Hermione and tries on one of her outfits.
Some of the hundred or so hats made for the production are seen in the wardrobe room.

Luke Kimball plays Harry's son Albus and moves around as he tries on his Hogwarts School look for the first time.
