Marvel Reveals How to Kill a Previously Unkillable Major X-Men Villain
Dark Ages #6 features Marvel’s finest formulating an intricate plan that involves lobotomy and a vampire’s bite to kill an immortal X-Men villain.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Dark Ages #6, available now from Marvel.
Apocalypse, the nigh-unkillable immortal and one of the most powerful mutants on Earth, meets his end in Dark Ages #6 via a creative plan that involves a partial lobotomy and the bite of Dracula.
Orchestrated by Moon Girl and tweaked by Doctor Doom — the “most innovative mind on the planet brainstorming with the most ruthless,” according to Dark Ages narrator Peter Parker — the plan to kill Apocalypse first requires Sue Storm to create a force-field around the mutant’s frontal lobe. This prevents the almighty villain from accessing his abilities just long enough for Nightcrawler to teleport beside him and rip his protective armor away.
Once Apocalypse lies exposed, Doctor Doom’s tweak to Moon Girl’s plan kicks in, which requires the unexpected addition of Dracula, who Doom speaks with earlier in the issue. Originally allied with Apocalypse, Dracula is none too happy to learn that En Sabah Nur secretly intends to destroy the planet. Preferring to rule over humanity rather than see it utterly annihilated, Dracula agrees to lunge in and bite Apocalypse, immediately turning the mutant into one of his undead spawn and granting him all of the vulnerabilities of a vampire. Once changed, Blade jumps into the fray and stakes both Apocalypse and Dracula through the heart while decapitating them in one swift stroke.
Apocalypse’s demise ends the mutant’s reign of terror across Europe in Dark Ages, which takes place in a post-apocalyptic world. In the first issue of the series, a mechanical monstrosity named the Unmaker was discovered buried beneath the crust of the Earth. It was only defeated after Doctor Strange opened a portal that unleashed an ongoing E.M.P. pulse across the globe. The E.M.P. wave knocked out all electricity, but humanity still managed to live on in this harsh world via steampunk technology.
En Sabah Nur planned to disable the E.M.P. pulse long enough to merge his mind with the Unmaker, creating an ultimate life form that would escalate his power to unimaginable levels and break the planet apart. Several major Marvel characters died when they came between Apocalypse and his goal, including Wolverine and Doctor Octopus in Dark Ages #6, and Human Torch in Dark Ages #3.
Dark Ages #6 is written by Tom Taylor and illustrated by Iban Coello. The final issue of the limited series is now on sale from Marvel.
