Man United loanee Martial ‘whistled by Sevilla fans’ amid poor La Liga form

A large section of Sevilla fans already seem to be running out of patience with Manchester United loanee Anthony Martial, who was jeered off in his latest outing.

The attacker was substituted with less than an hour on the close as Sevilla, currently second in La Liga, were held to a goalless draw by Real Sociedad. The 26-year-old was handed his first league start since coming back from injury, after playing 102 minutes in the 2-1 aggregate extra-time defeat to West Ham in the Europa League Last 16 on Thursday.

Martial has scored once in eight appearances for Sevilla and is yet to find the net in La Liga. Fans were less than impressed with the attacker’s shift on Sunday, the result of which let Barcelona close the gap to three points following their emphatic 4-0 triumph over Real Madrid in El Clasico.

Sport reports that some sections of the ground applauded Martial but most whistled as he was replaced by Youssef En-Nesyri. The reports adds that supporters are said to be underwhelmed by the United forward’s loan spell, which has produced one goal and one assist in eight games.

Martial was handed just five starts at Old Trafford this term prior to his temporary Spain switch. The France international is yet to complete a full 90 minutes in La Liga, despite starting four of the five he has featured in.

There remain questions over where Martial’s future lies with a new manager set to arrive at United this summer. His contract expires in June 2024 but if he and the club decide to part ways, then this shop window spell could have an impact on his selling price.
