Not Even Bones Is The Webtoon You Need To Binge Right Now
Based on a novel of the same name by Rebecca Schaeffer, Not Even Bones is a bingeworthy Webtoon that explores the grey areas of morality.
Rebecca Schaeffer’s bestselling 2018 novel Not Even Bones is a fresh take on the horror genre that has been translated into a Webtoon produced by Schaeffer and Glamist. The story follows Nita, the main character and antihero, who actually dissects bodies for a living. Fortunately, these are not regular bodies, as Nita and her mother hunt supernatural beings called “Unnaturals” and sell their body parts on the Black Market.
Not Even Bones exists in a world where the Unnaturals exist alongside human beings. The supernatural creatures are prone to being targeted, as their body parts can be used in ways that benefit humanity. This leads to further complications, because the Unnaturals are not inherently evil. While some are classified as dangerous, many others are considered “Innocents” which mean that they are believed to pose no threat to humans. In an effort to protect both humans and Unnaturals, the International Non-Human Police was established, and the “Dangerous Unnaturals List” was created.
Nita is the primary protagonist of the story, but she’s not exactly a hero. At 17, she works with her mom selling the body parts of Unnaturals on the Black Market. Nita doesn’t see anything wrong with this because she views the supernatural beings as less than human. She also has a tendency to justify her actions by reasoning that she’s not the one who actually kills the Unnaturals (that honor is left to her mother) but she merely dissects them for selling.
Nita’s pattern of thinking is abruptly interrupted one day when her mother instructs her to kill an Unnatural. Nita refuses and instead helps him escape. This leads to Nita being drugged, kidnapped and kept prisoner of the Death Market, which is the biggest dealer of Unnatural body parts in the world. There she meets several of the supernatural beings and discovers secrets that make her question everything she thought she knew about the world around her.
The artwork featured in Not Even Bones is incredible, blending elements of realism with an equal sense of something almost whimsical. The composition reflects the duality between Unnaturals and humans, black and white moral issues, and Nita’s inner turmoil as she discovers and navigates the truth.
Not Even Bones is a gritty horror story that has just enough light to offer hope for its characters. The Webtoon also offers a fresh and different portrayal of a teenage heroine. Typically, the heroine is selfless and always puts others before herself. Nita is a different kind of girl who takes the more realistic path of doing everything she can in the name of self-preservation. She’s not quite a hero nor villain, but merely a girl who is willing to do whatever it takes to survive a world she once thought she knew.
