The very first Power Rangers have finally found their way to safety, and their most powerful ally has led Dark Specter straight to it.

Power Rangers Universe has brought fans all the way back to the very beginning of the Mighty Morphin story, to the very first time the Morphin Masters tapped into the power of the Grid for themselves. Unfortunately, this was also the era when Dark Specter first posed a threat to the universe at large, and the Morphin Masters are both outmatched and outnumbered. The heroes can at least rest easy knowing that they have the legendary Morphinaut on their side, though not everything is as simple as it would appear. In fact, the future Phantom Ranger may have just betrayed his latest allies without even realizing it.
The Morphin Masters have seen their world invaded by the forces of Dark Specter, and they’ve done everything they can to stave off the threat. Alongside the Morphinaut, better known to fans as the Phantom Ranger, the young heroes have managed to get out of any immediate harm’s way for the time being. They still haven’t managed to escape their crumbling homeworld, however, and their last chance is a Proto Arch that may not even be operable. No matter their chances, the Morphin Masters decide that leaving for the unknown is still better than staying behind to fight an unwinnable war. Of course, there is always the risk that they will end up leading Dark Specter straight to the Arch as well. Even worse, that seems to be precisely the case in the pages of Power Rangers Universe #3 (by Nicole Andelfinger, Simone Ragazzoni, Mattia Iacono, and Ed Dukeshire), as the Morphinaut is overcome by a fleeting moment of darkness that reassures him he has led the others straight to their doom.
Clearly, the Phantom Ranger had no intention of betraying or deceiving the Morphin Masters, yet that appears to be precisely the case despite his intentions. This begs the question of exactly how he came to be tainted by Dark Specter’s influence, although the answer likely lies in the very same Morphin Grid which the heroes are hoping to escape into. The Morphin Grid and its energies have been theorized and described as the essence of life itself, while Dark Specter stands as the embodiment of entropy in its most malicious form.
Even if those theories are embellishments or oversimplifications of the truth, there is no denying that the Grid and Dark Specter are inextricably tied to one another even as polar opposites. It would only make sense that the same space between dimensions that the Grid Energy comes from would also be home or a bridge to Dark Specter’s own energies. Considering how long the Morphinaut was lost inside the Grid, the idea that he found something dark trapped along with him is easily conceivable.
With any luck, whatever dark passenger has attached itself to the Morphinaut won’t be more than the heroes can overcome. Knowing where the Phantom Ranger ends up in the future does confirm that he will at least survive the days to come, though there is no such historical evidence to say the same for the Morphin Masters. On the other hand, Dark Specter’s army hasn’t had any problems staying close behind their quarry so far, meaning the Morphinaut might not be as integral to the grander scheme as he seems. Assuming the Morphin Masters can get the Proto Arch working again, only time will tell if it is their salvation or the end of everything they have ever known.
