I saved a stranger’s life with my bumper sticker – they left a touching note
A STUDENT has revealed the incredible moment she discovered a bumper sticker on her car saved a stranger’s life.
Brooke Lacey, 22, returned to her car after lectures to find an emotional handwritten thank you note on her windscreen.
The touching note read: “Your sign saved my life today.
“I left my house with a plan and asked for a sign any sign I was doing the right thing when I saw your car in the parking lot. Thank you.”
The political science student from New Zealand had a simple but powerful message on her bumper sticker to help those struggling.
The message said: “Please don’t take your life today.
“The world is so much better with you in it. More than you realise, stay.”
Brooke shared on Twitter a photo of the note which is written on a napkin and explained: “Sometime this morning on my coffee run someone left this note tucked into my windshield.
“I had these made so long ago, put one on my car and forgot about them, until now.
“I am so glad whoever you are chose to stay today. You never know who needs this reminder.”
And Twitter users were quick to praise the student for that simple act of kindness.
One said: “The world needs more people like you Brooke.”
Another said: “I’m not crying you’re crying.”
One commented: “So awesome. This has absolutely made my night.
“But more importantly, the person who left the note is alive tonight thanks to Brooke.”
Brooke told the NZ Herald that at first, she hesitated reading the note because she thought someone would be upset with her for parking badly.
But she said her heart “completely dropped” when she finally read the note.
She said: “When I printed [the stickers] I remember thinking that at least one person could be helped by it – 99 per cent of people may see it and think nothing of it, but it was just a tool to let people know that they’re not alone.
“At the time, it feels like it will never get better, and the world feels so dark but it will get better.”
“It’s important to say they choose to stay – it’s a constant decision every day to stay and I just hope it’s a continuous decision, you know.
“Maybe [the sticker] was a sign they were supposed to see.”
You’re Not Alone
EVERY 90 minutes in the UK a life is lost to suicide.
It doesn’t discriminate, touching the lives of people in every corner of society – from the homeless and unemployed to builders and doctors, reality stars and footballers.
It’s the biggest killer of people under the age of 35, more deadly than cancer and car crashes.
And men are three times more likely to take their own life than women.
Yet it’s rarely spoken of, a taboo that threatens to continue its deadly rampage unless we all stop and take notice, now.
That is why The Sun launched the You’re Not Alone campaign.
The aim is that by sharing practical advice, raising awareness and breaking down the barriers people face when talking about their mental health, we can all do our bit to help save lives.
Let’s all vow to ask for help when we need it, and listen out for others… You’re Not Alone.
