Arsenal slammed by Ruben Neves for ‘celebrating like they won league’ after Wolves victory

Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves has taken a swipe at Arsenal for “celebrating like they won the league” after the Gunners dug out a 1-0 win on the road in the Black Country. Mikel Arteta’s side were forced to battle through the final 21 minutes – plus stoppage time – with 10 men after Gabriel Martinelli was sensationally sent off for two yellow cards within the same passage of play.

The Brazilian committed a foul but referee Michael Oliver was willing to play advantage before Martinelli broke up the play once again.

Yet to everyone’s surprise, Oliver dished out two yellows as opposed to one, handing Martinelli his marching orders.

Wolves then went in search for an equaliser, applying plenty of pressure but to no avail.

After the match, Arteta was furious with the officiating despite the three points, even claiming he will seek to organise a meeting with the Premier League to discuss some of the decisions from the match.

“We saw the way they celebrated the win and that shows the level we are. I didn’t see Arsenal celebrating like this in the past 10 years – it was like they won the league.”

The Portuguese midfielder is a player the Gunners looked at signing last summer but his comments may now hamper his chances of earning a move to the Emirates Stadium in the future.

Wolves boss Lage believes his side had done enough to win the match, insisting his goalkeeper was foul for Arsenal’s winner due to having two hands on the ball.

“I’m disappointed because I thought we were the better team,” he said.

“Our tempo was very good and we managed the game well but we didn’t score our chances and we suffered from a set-piece.

“I think there were two strange decisions, especially for our ‘goal’. But we continue to work.

“I saw the Arsenal goal and the striker kicked Jose Sa’s hand. It’s clear, so clear. When you look at the image it’s a strange decision.

“We did a good game and created chances but we are not scoring goals at the moment and we suffer because of that.”
