Louis Theroux blames Billie Eillish’s parents for porn ‘destroying her brain’
Louis Theroux has blamed Billie Eilish’s parents for not properly educating her about pornography.
The 51-year-old documentary maker has opened up about his own experiences watching X-rated material after the Bad Guy hitmaker, now 20, recently revealed she began watching porn when she was just 11, and is ‘angry’ at herself for the way it began to impact her sex life down the line and ‘destroyed her brain’.
Speaking to Radio Times, Louis said: ‘Someone needed to say to her when she was a child – it sounds like I’m blaming the parents, and maybe I am, slightly – children and young adults need to understand that the porn world isn’t the real world’
He compared porn to ‘junk food’ as gave his opinion on people watching it.
The filmmaker added: ‘In my life, of course, I’ve been a user of porn. I sort of see it as a bit like… maybe this sounds harsh, but it’s a bit like junk food, right?
‘It’s not something you’re especially proud of using. But there are times in your life when you can’t get a decent meal, or you’re in a rush, or you’re just trying to get a need met.’
Louis explained his three sons are nearing the age when they will discover such material online, and he’s already made sure to sit down and talk to them about the issue.
He explained: ‘I’m on the cusp of my kids entering that stage of their lives, so I may have a rude awakening ahead of me. I haven’t even disabled the settings on my internet. I’ve talked to them.
‘I have said to them, “When you see porn, if this is something you’ve stumbled across, just so you know, that’s not the real world. That’s not how people have sex. That’s people who are performing and doing things to satisfy consumers and don’t mistake it for how sex takes place”.
‘Along those lines. And it’s like, “Shut up, Dad”.’
Louis – who has made documentaries on the porn industry in the past – noted he wasn’t trying to discredit sex workers, but he insisted it’s a sensitive issue to break down.
‘I genuinely see sex work as work, and valid work, and I know that’s controversial in some quarters,’ he explained. ‘These stories are hard to tell, because enlightened, thoughtful, intelligent people can disagree passionately about what it means to be paid to have sex.’
Billie had shared her thoughts on porn during an interview with Howard Stern, in which she said: ‘As a woman, I think porn is a disgrace. I used to watch a lot of porn, to be honest. I started watching porn when I was like 11.
‘I think it really destroyed my brain and I feel incredibly devastated that I was exposed to so much porn.’
She recalled how the first few times she had sex, she found herself ‘not saying no to things that were not good’, as she added: ‘It was because I thought that’s what I was supposed to be attracted to.’
Billie also believes the adult content was responsible for her experiencing sleep paralysis and nightmares.
