Grant Morrison’s Action Comics Run May Have Referenced an Adult Superman Film

A fan online may have discovered a connection between Grant Morrison’s Action Comics run and a Superman adult film parody.

A fan online may have discovered a connection between Grant Morrison and Gene Ha’s run on Action Comics and a Superman porn parody.

In a post on Twitter, @DavidMan95 put a side-by-side image of Superdoomsday/Superdoom and the cover of 2011’s Superman XXX: A Porn Parody. Close-ups of the logos on the two characters are somewhat uncanny, leading to speculation Morrison and Ha may have been making a tongue-in-cheek reference to the porn parody in Action Comics.

Created by Morrison and Gene Ha, Superdoom first appeared in 2012’s Action Comics #9. Hailing from Earth-45, the character was created by Overcorp to be the company’s own version of Superman. Superdoom helped Overcorp take over the Earth of that universe and eventually killed several alternate versions of Superman.

At this time, it’s not clear if Morrison and Ha were making a reference to Superman XXX or if the resemblance is merely a coincidence. In a 2012 interview with Comic Box Commentary, Ha explained the logo, saying, “The corporate Superman symbol I designed is a combination of the Kingdom Come symbol, a swastika, a mirror-imaged Soviet hammer and sickle, and a dollar sign.”

Morrison is an award-winning comic book writer known for, among many other acclaimed works, his time on such titles and characters as Batman, The AuthorityNew X-Men and All-Star Superman. Following the New 52 reboot of DC’s line, Morrison began writing Action Comics.

Ha is a comic book artist known for his work on such titles as Top Ten and The Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix. He’s won several Eisner Awards for his work. One of his upcoming projects is Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons Book Two, which is slated for release this year.

Directed and written by Axel Braun, Superman XXX is one of many porn parodies based on the Man of Steel. Braun has done a number of different porn parodies of pop culture figures, including 2010’s Batman XXX: A Porn Parody and 2016’s Suicide Squad XXX: An Axel Braun Parody. Braun’s work has won several major awards.

Created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Kal-El/Clark Kent/Superman first appeared in 1938’s Action Comics #1. Originally from the planet Krypton, Superman was sent to Earth by his parents. When he arrived, he was adopted by Jonathan and Martha Kent, two farmers in Smallville. Clark soon developed superhuman powers thanks to the Earth’s yellow sun.
