Tim Allen to revive The Santa Clause for Disney+ streaming series

Or more accurately, the suburban dad who unwittingly took on Santa’s duties after a roof-based mishap one Christmas Eve.

Allen will star in and produce The Santa Clause, a limited series for streaming platform Disney+, returning to the role he originated 28 years ago.

In the new chapter, Scott is almost 65 years old and wondering how much longer he can keep delivering presents to children all over the world. And he wants to give his family a normal life away from the north pole.

So, he resolves to find a replacement but that’s easier said than done with a lot of people (and elves) invested in who’s going to take on the responsibility.

The series is set to start production in March. While no date is set for the release, it wouldn’t be surprising if it’s timed to premiere in the run-up to this year’s holiday season.

Jack Burditt, who has worked on 30 Rock, Modern Family, Frasier and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, will serve as showrunner.

The original The Santa Clause movie came out in 1994 at the peak of Allen’s global fame while he was headlining American sitcom Home Improvement. Two sequels followed, in 2002 and 2006.

Allen has a longstanding relationship with Disney as the voice of Buzz Lightyear in the Toy Story series as well as other productions such as The Shaggy Dog, Jungle 2 Jungle and Galaxy Quest.

In May, Allen wrapped up his TV show Last Man Standing, which had been cancelled previously before getting a second life years later.

An upcoming Buzz Lightyear-focused movie will not feature Allen’s voice. Rather, the character is something of a spin-off from the Buzz of the Toy Story movies and will be voiced by Chris Evans.

Disney has been reviving several library titles for its streaming service, including new instalments of Home Alone, The Mighty Ducks and Turner and Hooch.
