Mauricio Pochettino ‘admires’ out-of-form Man Utd star struggling under Rangnick
The England international has endured a frustrating season so far, having begun the campaign on the sidelines after recovering from surgery on his shoulder.
He netted against Leicester and Tottenham after returning to the side in October, but his strike against Spurs remains the last time he got on the score sheet after a disastrous run of form in front of goal.
Rashford has failed to net in his last eight Premier League matches – and 11 games in all competitions – while he was heavily criticised for his performance in Monday night’s FA Cup win over Aston Villa.
The 24-year-old, like several of United’s attackers, appears to have struggled to adapt to interim manager Ralf Rangnick’s philosophy and formation, with the 4-2-2-2 formation demanding a lot from the frontmen.
But in better news for Rashford, The Times report that Paris Saint-Germain boss Pochettino – one of the frontrunners to land the Old Trafford job permanently – remains a fan of the forward despite his struggles.
Pochettino, who also tried to sign Anthony Martial when he was at Spurs, is an ‘admirer’ of Rashford’s ability and there is a sense that the Argentine coach could be the key to getting Rashford back firing again.
The academy graduate’s current contract expires in 2023 but United are ready to open renewal talks before the end of this season in a move that will likely please Pochettino should he end up moving to Manchester.
Trying to explain the cause of Rashford’s struggles, Rangnick said this week: ‘I think he’s trying hard in training, he was doing well in training the last couple of days and that’s why he was quite rightly in the starting XI.
‘I think in the first half we found him quite often and in the first half he also tried to get into the box. In the second half, that was not that often the case, that’s why I decided to make two changes, bringing on Anthony Elanga and Jesse Lingard.’
He continued: ‘Especially for strikers, it’s important that they score goals on and off and have their moments of success. Of course it would be good if Marcus scored a goal but as long as he’s trying, as long as he’s playing well I don’t see much of a problem.’
