‘Cheer’ returns, the legacy of Vince Carter and the true story behind ‘Scream’ — what’s streaming on Netflix, Prime Video and more for Canadians this week
With so many different streaming platforms and cable offerings to navigate, choosing what to watch has never been harder. To make things easier, here are our best tune-in tips for the week ahead.
Naomi
Kaci Walfall stars in this new DC drama that is the latest comic-themed program from the CW. It follows in the footsteps of “Arrow” and “The Flash” but is a little more unique as it tells the story of a relatable teenage girl who begins to discover her superpowers. While that story has been told before, this show is very 2022 in terms of the diversity of its cast, the openness of the title character’s sexuality (Naomi has three love interests of different genders) and the general playfulness of the show’s tone.
Showcase, 9 p.m.
WEDNESDAY
Cheer
After taking home a Creative Arts Emmy Award for Outstanding Structured Reality Program in 2020, Netflix’s breakout hit about the Navarro College Bulldogs cheer team in Texas is back. While the compelling first effort focused on how a team of cheerleaders prepared for a national competition in Daytona Beach, the second season promises to be, well, less cheerful. It will focus on COVID-19 disrupting the 2020 season and the criminal accusations faced by one member of the team.
Netflix
Children Ruin Everything
This new CTV original comedy follows a couple of parents as they raise their two young children, struggling to maintain the lives they had prior to their arrival. CTV and CTV.ca, 8 p.m.
Eternals
The 26th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe features an all-star cast including Kit Harington, Salma Hayek, Angelina Jolie and Kumail Nanjiani. Have to hand it to Discovery Plus for the perfect timing of the story that inspired the blockbuster “Scream” horror movie franchise. Set to premiere on the same day as the release of the highly anticipated fifth “Scream” film, this two-hour special profiles serial killer Danny Rolling, a.k.a. the Gainesville Ripper, who inspired the movie’s main villain.
