Broadway actress Joan Copeland has died at the age of 99, it has been confirmed.

Copeland, who was also the sister of playwright Arthur Miller and Marilyn Monroe’s one-time sister-in-law, died in her sleep at her Manhattan apartment, her son Eric told The Hollywood Reporter.

The actress – born Joan Maxine Miller – made her debut on Broadway in 1948 and starred in several productions, including Detective Story, Sundown Beach, Not For Children, 45 Seconds From Broadway and Two by Two.

She also served as Katharine Hepburn’s standby as Coco Chanel in the musical Coco, which ran from 1969-70 spanning 320 shows.

In 1991, she won an Obie Award for her performance in Richard Greenburg’s The American Plan. Copeland was particularly celebrated for her work in 1976’s Pal Joey and her turn in 1980’s The American Clock, written by her brother, which earned her a Drama Desk Award.

Copeland amassed a string of TV credits, with roles in E.R., All In The Family, The Patty Duke Show, Cagney & Lacey, NYPD Blue and a recurring stint as Judge Rebecca Stein on Law & Order from 1991 to 2001.

Notably, Copeland enjoyed a lengthy soap career, starring in 400 episodes of Search for Tomorrow between 1967 and 1972, and series such as The Edge of Night, Love of Life, How to Survive a Marriage, As the World Turns and One Life to Live.

Copeland was once related to Monroe through the screen icon’s marriage to her brother Miller.

Pulitzer-prize winner Miller – who was best known for the plays Death of a Salesman, A View From The Bridge and All My Sons – died in 2005 aged 89.

Copeland was married to bacteriologist George Kupchik from 1943 until his death in July 1989. She is survived by family members including her niece, actress Lady Rebecca Miller, who is married to Sir Daniel Day Lewis.
