More virus cases arrive in WA

WA recorded zero new local cases of Covid-19, but the number of positive cases in quarantine continues to rise.

Western Australia recorded 14 new cases of Covid-19 overnight, taking the state’s total active cases to 53.

All of the new cases are in quarantine and are not related to the recent backpacker cluster or to the hotel quarantine security guard who tested positive on Sunday.

Interstate travel accounted for 11 of the cases, with six being recent travellers from Queensland and three from Tasmania.

Three of the cases were international arrivals, and two were interstate truck drivers who were tested at the border.

Health authorities are continuing to work with casual and close contacts of the backpacker outbreak, which stands at 18 positive cases.

Concerns remain over the testing of those linked to the outbreak, with 25 of 804 close contacts yet to be tested.

There are also 1452 casual contacts linked to the Perth mess hall, with four yet to be tested.

Officials are also investigating the case of the hotel quarantine security guard, which has now yielded 15 close contacts.

Of those, 12 have returned a negative result, two results are pending and one is yet to be tested.

A total of 4,476 tests were conducted on Monday, with the state expanding its testing capacity, including operating hours of clinics.

Western Australia has recorded just 1190 cases of Covid-19 since the pandemic began.
