How many of THESE dashboard symbols do you recognise in your car?

CAN you tell the difference between dashboard symbols for traction control and gearbox failure? Bulb monitoring and a locked airbag?

Motorists across the country are investing in the hottest hi-tech new vehicles – but many don’t know the difference between basic dash drawings.

Dashboard symbols are absolutely crucial - but can you tell the difference between them all?
Dashboard symbols are absolutely crucial – but can you tell the difference between them all?

Research from BuyaCar reveals many drivers can’t identify several of the symbols popping up on their control panel.

With colourful pics warning of engine oil pressure, brake pad monitoring and cruise control, Brits often struggle working out what they all mean.

Six in particular are proving the most taxing, according to 1,000 drivers polled by the motoring website.

Austin Collins, MD at BuyaCar warned motorists to read through their manual to familiarise themselves with the new icons.

Not only do they make you safer behind the wheel, but they can also improve your driving experience by taking advantage of useful features.

He said: “We can laugh at some of the mistakes drivers make in the struggle to keep pace with in-car technology.

“But it’s unfortunate that so many people are clearly missing out on some of the features and benefits of their cars.”

Which is cruise control and which is for your suspension?

Bear in mind that one is about speed and the other is about the car’s centre of gravity.

It’s not too difficult when you think about it, but with the road to focus on it can be a tad confusing.

Windshield wipers vs turn signals

Automatic gearbox vs bulb monitoring

Notorious difficult to tell apart, these two are both yellow-ish symbols with big exclamation marks surrounded by circles?

Can you picture them?

Keep in mind that the gearbox symbol is a cog to represent the inner workings of your gear system.

Meanwhile the bulb is represented by outward lines meant to resemble light.

Steering wheel lock

A nice and easy one to finish off, this symbol combines two different illustrations.

One is an easy car feature to identify, while the other should be a big clue to the “lock” part of the car mode.

But with such an important part of driving at stake, you’ll need to know this one particularly well.

Is it a problem that people don’t know the difference?

Collins added: “One clue to why this might be comes from another part of our survey, which revealed that only half of us bother to look through the manual before starting to use our new cars.

“Cars are evolving all the time and not only is it important to understand a car to drive it safely, it makes no sense to miss out on some of the benefits for which you have paid.”
