More Covid headaches for NBL

The Covid-19 pandemic continues to cause fixture headaches for the NBL, which has postponed more matches because of positive tests.

The NBL has postponed three more matches this week – two involving the Perth Wildcats – as the Covid-19 pandemic continues to disrupt the competition.

The Wildcats were due to face Adelaide 36ers at Adelaide Entertainment Centre on Tuesday and Brisbane Bullets at Nissan Arena on Saturday, but both matches will be played at a later date.

However, Perth will instead take on the Cairns Taipans on Friday at 8pm AEDT at the Cairns Convention Centre, replacing the New Zealand Breakers, who were scheduled to play the Taipans.

A 36ers team member tested positive for Covid, with all players and game-day staff deemed close contacts and forced into isolation.

The Adelaide-South East Melbourne clash scheduled for Adelaide Entertainment Centre on Sunday has also been pushed onto another day.

The new game dates are yet to be determined but are set to be released in the coming days.

The latest postponements follow several positive Covid tests last week among players at the Bullets and Illawarra Hawks after they played each other.

That resulted in a series of matches this week being put on hold as the NBL battles to keep the season on track despite the difficulties of the Omicron variant.

An NBL statement on Tuesday said the decisions were made in line with its Covid health and safety protocols and respective state government close contact requirements.

The league said the health and safety of players, coaches, clubs, staff and fans was its top priority in these matters.

Players and staff will continue to be regularly tested for the virus, while individuals impacted or deemed close contacts will undergo additional testing.
