Eddie Hearn confirms Tyson Fury blow in Joshua vs Usyk update
Anthony Joshua’s rematch with Oleksandr Usyk looks set to go ahead in early 2022, with Eddie Hearn confirming a date when expects the fight to take place.
Joshua triggered a rematch clause with Usyk after losing his WBA, IBF and WBO crowns.
Tyson Fury wanted to face Usyk in a unification bout in the coming months in the hope of becoming the undisputed heavyweight world champion and there was talk of Joshua stepping aside to allow the fight.
But Hearn has confirmed AJ will take on Usyk again with the contest likely to take place in the UK.
The Brit was outclassed by Usyk in September with the Ukrainian out-boxing him for the vast majority of the fight.
Usyk’s team had already indicated a rematch clause had been activated in principle, with the two camps working out a date for the fight – and Hearn has now revealed when it is likely to go ahead.
Speaking to iFL TV, Hearn said: “We’ve got to get together and decide a date.
“April is realistic for that fight. AJ is the type that fights twice-a-year, and sometimes we feel like it would be nice to fight three times-a-year.
“We’ve had offers from around the world, but I think the UK will stage that fight.”
Joshua’s intentions to avenge his first defeat to Usyk were made clear when speculation ramped up about him potentially stepping aside for Fury.
Joshua’s camp completely shut down the offer once promoter Hearn presented him with the opportunity.
