Popular tourist spots to face travel rule changes as Shapps ‘prepared to add’ to red list

Although there are currently no countries on the travel red list, the Government has said it remains an option. The last seven countries were removed from the red list on October 18.

Grant Shapps, Transport Secretary, said the Government is “prepared to add countries and territories back if needed”.

Austria entered a full scale 10 day lockdown on November 22 in a bid to get cases under control.

Germany has also confirmed it is in the grip of a fourth wave as temperatures drop across the continent.

Daily infections in Germany have hit a German record of over 65,000 and unvaccinated people are due to be banned from certain venues in new measures.

Data analyst Tim White has listed the destinations around the world that have seen a dramatic increase in cases and could end up on the red list.

He said Norway was seeing record case rates. The country saw an all-time high in last week’s seven-day average according to The Independent.

Iceland and Denmark are also experiencing a spike in Covid cases as winter sets in in Northern Europe.

The Netherlands has also suffered an increase in Covid rates and has introduced a curfew to bars and restaurants.

Slovakia has also experienced a dramatic increase in Covid cases and could be at risk of ending up on the travel red list.

Belgium is also at risk and has seen a surge in Covid with over 12,000 new cases recorded on Wednesday.

Czechia’s daily cases have risen by 50 percent compared to a week ago while Finland’s have also risen by 21 percent.

Croatia has also experienced a rise in cases since August which Mr White was said was an issue of concern.

British tourists will need to take a lateral flow test on or before day two after arrival in the UK from any international destination.

Tests must be booked with a Government approved provider which can be found listed on the Government website.

Sajid Javid told Sky News that the UK was “on the right path” and was not planning to move to harsher Covid restrictions.

However the chief executive of NHS Providers, Chris Hopson said: “We know that the NHS tends to feel the most pressure in early to mid-January so there is a high degree of concern.”
