Following an emergency meeting that took place amongst the club’s hierarch, the board made the decision to dismiss Solskjaer almost three years on from when he succeeded Jose Mourinho on an interim basis.

On his exit, Solskjaer told United’s club website :”This club means everything to me and together we’re a good match, but unfortunately I couldn’t get the results we needed and it’s time for me to step aside.”

He joined Manchester United in July 1996 and played 366 times and scored 126 goals for the Reds.

In 2007, Solskjær announced his retirement from football but remained at Manchester United in a coaching role as well as in an ambassadorial capacity.
