Jane McDonald on fiance’s death ‘Don’t want to feel sad for the rest of my life’

Jane McDonald, 58, tragically lost her fiancé Eddie Rothe in March after he lost his battle with lung cancer. The presenter broke down in tears as she opened up about her feelings months after her loss during a recent appearance on Loose Women.

Thursday’s appearance on the ITV programme marked Jane’s first time speaking publicly since Ed’s passing.

Jane could not contain her emotions as she remembered her beloved partner of 13 years.

She apologised as she began to cry before being able to speak.

“I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry. I didn’t want to be like this,” Jane said.

“I’m not good at being sad. I’m not good at this and I’m not good at crying.

“Every day when I wake up and get that thud like someone’s just hit me, I think, ‘Are you going to go down the dark path where you’ve been for the last year, or are you going to be grateful for everything you’ve got in your life, and grateful for the time you had him and remember him how I want to remember him?’”

The tragic news of Ed’s death came in April, with the presenter sharing a heartfelt statement announcing his passing.

The message was shared on Jane’s Instagram, where she has garnered 124,000 followers.

The statement read: “It is with immense sadness that we share the news that Jane’s beloved long term partner, Ed, passed away on Friday 26th March.

“He had been battling lung cancer for the last few months.

“We would like to thank everyone for all their help and support during this very difficult time, especially the NHS staff and the wonderful team at The Wakefield Hospice.

“The funeral took place earlier today and we would please ask for your kindness in observing Jane’s privacy for her and Ed’s family at this sad time.”
