Sherlock catapulted Benedict to fame almost overnight when the first episode aired in 2010, and the actor has been going from strength to strength since.
Having secured a place in the Marvel universe as Doctor Strange and portraying Cold War spy Greville Wynne in the critically acclaimed The Courier this year, Benedict is now a renowned actor with global status.
But he’s not ruling out returning to his roots to the show that gained him his first massive fanbase.
The 45-year-old was asked in a recent interview if there was a chance he could return to make more Sherlock, and unfortunately for fans, he said it may have ‘had it’s moment for now’.
However, he vowed: ‘I still never say never.’
‘I really like that character’, the Desolation of Smaug star told Esquire, but ‘the circumstances need to be right [for the show to return] and I think maybe it’s too soon now to see it have another life.
‘But that’s not to say it wouldn’t have another iteration for the future.’
Although Benedict wasn’t able to say that he would definitely return to the role if asked, he downright refused to say if he would give his blessing for a new actor to play his former role.
Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss, speaking in the same interview, said he is asked ‘every day’ if they will ever return to the BBC series, which isn’t surprising considering the phenomenal effect it had on fans before its finale in 2017.
Mark, who also played Myroft Holmes, Sherlock’s brother in the series, told the outlet that no other actor could have played the iconic detective.
Benedict was ‘the perfect match’ to the character, Mark said, from his age to his looks, and his ‘”otherness” marked him out’.
‘I have no problem with writing Sherlock but we do need people to show up and do it,’ he replied.
‘It’s not really down to me, it’s down to our very famous lead.’
However, he added: ‘If the boys wanted to do it again, I’m sure we’d haul it back into life … But as I say, it’s not down to me I’m afraid.’
