With Foo Fighters returning to Saturday Night Live this weekend, let’s look at the band’s past SNL appearances – beginning in the 1990s.
After a two-episode “mixed bag” start to the 49th season of NBC’s Saturday Night Live, we have some seriously high hopes for this weekend’s Halloween weekend edition of SNL. Along with first-time host/stand-up comedian Nate Bargatze, we have musical guest Foo Fighters (Dave Grohl, Nate Mendel, Pat Smear, Chris Shiflett, Rami Jaffee, and Josh Freese) – a band that is definitely no stranger to performing in Studio 8H. In fact, in honor of the band making its return, we’re taking a look back at the Foo Fighters’ SNL timeline to highlight how it impacted the long-running sketch comedy/music series. We’ll be kicking things off in the mid-to-late 90s with some audio & video of their early runs – along with some perspectives from the band members.
During 1994’s Season 20 Episode 6: “John Turturro/Tom Petty” show, Grohl had the opportunity to play drums for the show’s musical guest Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers – with Grohl discussing the experience in a clip from the documentary Runnin’ Down A Dream. Following that, we have audio of 1995’s Season 21 Episode 7: “Anthony Edwards” show, where the musical guest performed “I’ll Stick Around” and “For All the Cows.” In addition, we have a look at the band having some end-of-show wrap-up fun on stage. Finally, the band was the musical guest on 1999’s Season 25 Episode 4: “Dylan McDermott,” where they performed “Learn to Fly” and “Stacked Actors,” and we have a look at what the band had to share about that and other visits in a “Creating ‘Saturday Night Live'” featurette (followed by audio/video of the songs):
Now, here’s a look back at the intro video that was released by SNL earlier today to welcome Bargatze & welcome back Foo Fighters to Studio 8H this weekend:
NBC’s Saturday Night Live Season 49 company includes Michael Che, Mikey Day, Andrew Dismukes, Chloe Fineman, Heidi Gardner, Marcello Hernandez, James Austin Johnson, Punkie Johnson, Colin Jost, Molly Kearney, Michael Longfellow, Ego Nwodim, Sarah Sherman, Kenan Thompson, Chloe Troast, Devon Walker, and Bowen Yang. SNL is executive-produced by Lorne Michaels, with Liz Patrick directing and SNL alum Darrell Hammond announcing. Broadcasting from Studio 8H in Rockefeller Center, the long-running late-night sketch comedy/music series is produced by SNL Studios in association with Universal Television and Broadway Video.
