Quintessential village pubs with their own campsites from £25 a night
WELCOME to our Tuesday travel special, where each week we bring you inspiration for your holidays at home and abroad.
This week we’re celebrating the great British pub. But not just any pubs.
Our list features top inns that offer camping, so you can pitch up next door after enjoying a few pints.
Royal Standard, Cornwall
TUCKED away in charming Cornish village Gwinear, the family-friendly Royal Standard serves an excellent home-cooked pasty you can gobble up while listening to live music.
The grassy site next door is a dreamy camping spot too, with electric hook-ups, campfires and immaculate views of rolling countryside.
Expect to share the space with some animal and bird friends too, including two dogs and a flock of chickens.
Hayle Harbour, St. Ives and the sandy beaches of Gwithian are all within a short drive of the site.
Pitches from £35 per night.
Tuckers Grave Inn, Somerset
IN rural Somerset, near Rodney Stoke, you’ll find the oldest cider house in Britain, Tuckers Grave Inn.
Leave the phones at home and get exploring at a pub which proudly states that it’s “free from tellies, flashy fruit machines, and jukeboxes”.
When you’ve sloshed back all the cider you can manage, retire to the campsite which has more than 70 pitches, including space for motorhomes.
If you’re with kids, swing by Longleat Safari park while you’re here, or marvel at the magnificence of Stonehenge.
Pitches from £25 per night.
Chequers Inn, Derbyshire
PERFECT for couples, the Chequers Inn is in the Derbyshire village of Stanton By Dale and connected to the adults-only Irondale campsite.
Each pitch has its own grassy area, picnic table and electricity.
There is a fishing lake on site and the real beauty of the venue lies in the number of glorious walking trails you can find right on your doorstep.
The pub serves a great homemade steak pie, as well as hand-carved ham with locally-sourced duck eggs and chips.
Pitches from £30 per night.
The Limeburners, West Sussex
THE traditional Limeburners pub dates back to the 17th century and is idyllic in summer thanks to a tranquil garden shaded by willow trees.
Pitch your tent in the scenic, dog-friendly campsite next door, or push the boat out and book one of the pub’s camping pods which have a double bed and sofa bed, a small patio with a dining table and a fire pit.
If you’ve drunk the bar dry, then a 10-minute drive away is Nutbourne Vineyards which offers excellent tours and tastings.
Camping pitches cost from £35per night and the glamping pods cost from £85.
Three Horseshoes, Lincolnshire
IF strolling the Lincolnshire Wolds with the dog in tow then stopping for a pie and a pint in a secluded pub sounds like your cup of tea, you’ll love the Three Horseshoes in Louth.
If you’re visiting on a weekend, stay for the roast served with all the trimmings or pick up an ice cream from the sandy Sutton on Sea, which is a 30-minute drive.
If you don’t fancy slumming it in a tent in the pub’s campsite, upgrade to a dog-friendly lodge pod which comes with ensuites, a kitchenette and TV.
Pitches cost from £28 per night, while a lodge pod costs from £35.
