Virgil van Dijk has led tributes to Jordan Henderson after the Liverpool captain confirmed he is leaving the club.

Henderson brings an end to his 12-year stay at Anfield ahead of his controversial move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq, managed by Reds legend Steven Gerrard.

Confirming his departure, the England international shared an emotional goodbye message to the club and its supporters on Wednesday evening.

His Liverpool teammates were quick to congratulate the 32-year-old on his career on Merseyside, leaving the club after winning the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and two EFL Cups.

Liverpool defender van Dijk, who is expected to replace Henderson as club captain, commented on Henderson’s goodbye video with the message: ‘Captain, leader, legend!’

Andy Robertson commented: ‘Love you brother’ while Cody Gakpo wrote: ‘Thank you captain’.

England teammates Declan Rice also Reece James also congratulated the former Sunderland star on his Liverpool career.

Henderson has agreed an eye-watering contract worth around £700,000-per-week with Al-Ettifaq, who agreed a £12m fee with Liverpool for his services.

The club have also recruited former Celtic, Lyon and Atletico Madrid striker Moussa Dembele, whose arrival at the club was confirmed on Thursday.

A number of high-profile players have moved to Saudi Arabia this summer, including Real Madrid legend Karim Benzema and former Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante.

Premier League stars Roberto Firmino, Edouard Mendy, Kalidou Kouliably and Ruben Neves are also among those to have joined Saudi Pro League clubs in a trend sparked by Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Al-Nassr last December.

Paris Saint-Germain and France forward Kylian Mbappe has also been the subject of a world record £259m bid from Saudi side Al-Hilal, who are prepared to pay the Frenchman a staggering £604m on a one-year deal.

Mbappe however is thought to have rejected the move, refusing to even discuss the offer with Al-Hilal officials.

The Saudi club have however wrapped up a deal for former Barcelona winger Malcom and are close to finalising a deal for Mbappe’s PSG teammate Marco Verratti.
