Kate Middleton not allowed to wear a tiara after 5pm – rules the royals must follow
The Royal Family are known for their extensive jewellery collection, from their necklaces, to their brooches and their rings. However, the tiaras are what really excite royal fans, especially when Kate Middleton wears them at royal engagements. The Duchess of Cambridge has been known to borrow tiaras from the Queen’s collection over the last 10 years.
But Kate cannot just wear tiaras whenever she likes. She may be the future Queen of England, but that doesn’t mean Kate can wear the Queen’s tiaras whenever she fancies.
Along with many other areas of life for the Royal Family, there are strict rules that dictate when the Duchess of Cambridge and other female royals are allowed to wear tiaras.
There are two main rules that allow female royals to qualify for wearing tiaras.
Either they must be married to a member of the Royal Family, or they must be born a Princess.
Therefore, Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle were both able to borrow the Queen’s tiaras to wear on their wedding days.

Kate chose to borrow the Queen’s Cartier Halo tiara for her wedding in 2011.
The Duchess’s first post-wedding tiara was worn in December 2013 at the annual diplomatic reception at Buckingham Palace.
For this, she chose the Lotus Flower Tiara, which is also sometimes referred to as the Papyrus Tiara.
The dainty tiara, which features both diamonds and pearls, was a favourite of Princess Margaret’s.

When Meghan married Prince Harry in 2018, the Duchess opted for a Bandeau tiara that used to belong to the Queen’s grandmother, Queen Mary.
Similarly, when Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice got married in 2018 and 2020 respectively, they were both also able to borrow tiaras from the royal collection.
Princess Eugenie wore the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik tiara on her wedding day, which was lent to her by Queen Elizabeth.
However, just because Kate Middleton qualifies to wear a tiara, this still does not mean she is able to wear one any time she likes.
There are strict rules governing when tiaras may be worn.
It is reportedly frowned upon to wear tiaras to anything other than white tie events, and even then, only after 5pm.
As royal weddings tend to be in the morning, they are the exception to this rule, however.
As a result, the only occasions Kate has been spotted wearing a tiara apart from on her wedding day are at events of state, such as banquets.
