Pierre Gasly pushes Carlos Sainz as temper boils over after British Grand Prix
Tempers flared between Pierre Gasly and Carlos Sainz again in an interview following the British Grand Prix, just weeks after the Alpine driver blasted the Spaniard. Gasly endured a frustrating day at Silverstone and looked to push Sainz in the back as he performed his post-race duties.
Gasly’s puncture after passing the pit entry handed Alpine a double DNF after Esteban Ocon bowed out earlier in the race.
It followed an earlier incident with Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll, where the Canadian forced him off the track by making contact with an attempted inside overtake on Turn 16.
Stroll received a five-second penalty for the incident, seeing him finish in P14 rather than P11.
But Gasly also seemed annoyed by the manner in which Sainz overtook him in a closely-contested midfield battle before his withdrawal.
And the Frenchman made his disgruntlement known after the race, walking behind Sainz and giving him a nudge on the back, seemingly saying: “Don’t push me like that.”
Sainz responded with a smirk on his face: “Huh? Poor thing.”
Gasly aimed fire at Sainz after Canadian Grand Prix qualifying in June, labelling his driving as ‘unacceptable and unfair’.
In the closing stages of a rainy Q1, Sainz slowed down on the first corner, which left the cars following him at risk of not being able to set a final flying lap time.
Gasly was forced to run off the track, costing him the chance to set a final time and seeing him dumped out in 17th.
Sainz faced punishment through a three-place grid penalty, demoting him to 11th at the start of the Grand Prix, but it didn’t stop Gasly ripping into the Spaniard.
“I don’t think any words can express the disappointment and frustration right now,” Gasly told Sky Sports.
He added: “Carlos did the worst job possible to stay completely on the racing line. For me, that’s completely unacceptable and unfair. I have no words to explain what happened.
“We know that last chicane, everyone is bumping into each other, and you have to pay extra attention. The bare minimum is to at least be off-line.
“First, this was impeding, and second, it was extremely dangerous. If I smash him at 300kph, it puts him in danger and also myself. It’s completely unfair.”
